5 Analytical methods for the detection of waterborne and environmental pathogenic mycobacteria 5.1 INTRODUCTION This chapter reviews the state-of-the-art methods for the detection of pathogenic mycobacteria in the environment. It provides a concise review of the literature surrounding this aspect of mycobacteriology. Some unusual features define the genus Mycobacterium. These include a waxy cell wall made up of long-chain mycolic acids and DNA with a high G+C content. However, these shared characteristics (discussed in Chapter 4) belie a high degree of inter-species heterogeneity. Widely varying growth rates, specific growth requirements and differing natural ecologies are three examples of this heterogeneity (see Chapter 2). It has important consequences for the detection of mycobacterial pathogens in the

A Review on Environmental Mycobacteria in Iran

Abstract Mycobacterium genus, including pathogenic and environmental species, is called non-tuberculosis mycobacteria. In this review, we assessed the research about the frequency of non-tuberculosis mycobacteria in Iran. The analyses showed that there are 16 and 28 mycobacterial species isolated in water and soil samples, respectively. The most frequent mycobacterial species in water were M. f...
